California’s rivers are raging this spring, thanks to an extraordinarily heavy snowpack, and authorities are warning swimmers and boaters to exercise particular caution over the Memorial Day weekend.

“This is a good weekend to avoid rivers entirely and go out on a lake,” said Jeff McCracken, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which controls dams on the Trinity, Sacramento and American rivers.

“The rivers are just too high right now,” McCracken said. “Going out on them is risky. We’ve already had three rescues on the American River below Folsom Dam.”
